Rione Monti and the cinema

A district loved by cinema

Rione Monti has long been beloved by cinema. In the 1950s, Totò and Peppino filmed La banda degli onesti here, turning its piazzas into iconic sets. In the 1980s, Mario Monicelli chose it for Il Marchese del Grillo and later dedicated a tender short film to it. Even today’s directors continue the homage: Ferzan Özpetek set scenes from Nuovo Olimpo here, and the series Nero a metà captured its urban, genuine spirit. Even Woody Allen filmed in the district in To Rome with Love (2012), he chose Via dei Serpenti to portray a romantic, vibrant Rome brimming with untold stories.
